Friday’s Food Bites: Pretentious Barrel House, closing Law Bird Supply House; The original Pancake House joins New Albany

There’s always a lot going on in the Columbus restaurant world! Here is the latest:

• The owner of Pretentious barrel house announced this week that the brewery will close after August 11 of this year. Located at 745 Taylor Ave., Pretentious specializes in sour beers and has been open since 2017.
• Owners Luke and Annie Williams Pierce of Law Bird announced the closing of Law Bird Supply House after this Saturday, July 27. The wine shop is located at 1306 Grandview Ave.; it came as an extension of the Law Bird cocktail bar in the Brewery District, growing out of the bar’s displaced retail operations during the pandemic.
• Dipped Donut in Delaware will close its main bakery after this Saturday, July 27, in order to convert the space into a production facility for its neighboring gluten-free bakery.
• The Original Pancake House opened its third central Ohio location last week at 6330 E. Dublin Granville Rd. near New Albany. This merges the locations in Upper Arlington AND in Westerville near Polaris.
• The new owners Starliner Diner in Hilliard announced this week that they had purchased it York Steak House. The owner of the steakhouse had asked to retire after running the restaurant since 1966 and put the business up for sale. Its location at 4220 W. Broad St. is the last remaining store of a chain that once spanned more than 180 locations across the country. Readers (myself included) were initially confused by Starliner’s announcement, which said they had purchased steak and dishes from it would appear on Starliner. (The same issue came up a few months ago when the owners announced they had purchased Nancy’s Home Cooking recipes to be served at dinner.) They later clarified that the steakhouse and bar will remain open and unchanged.
• Speaking of steakhouses… Capital grid The steakhouse is set to open at 1827 Olentangy River Rd. in Lennox Square this Sunday, July 28. This is the chain’s first location in Columbus.
• Between bankruptcy and litigation, Melted + grilled grass has closed the last Columbus location in Easton. It had already closed its Short North store in mid-2022. The remaining fusion locations in Northeast Ohio remain open.
• Kitchen & Bar Catchment just launched his newest cocktail menutitled The New Kid Ink Album.
• Don Tequila Mexican Grill and Cantina opened this week at 1540 Bethel Rd. in the former Texas Roadhouse space. This is near the front of the Bethel Center, which includes restaurants like India’s new restaurant AND KPOT Korean BBQ and Hot Pot.
• AND Ohio State Fair started last wednesday! It runs until Sunday, August 4 and features the usual fairground fare, plus delicious lemonade, deviled eggs and other dishes.
